Moments that make my day: one of the people in the zumba class I taught tonight asked “Were you ever a cheerleader ? You’re so energetic and peppy.” I’ll take it as a compliment… although I was the FARTHEST thing from cheerleader in High School.
I was a drama club nerd all the way 🙂
So, it’s happens… I go through phases when I’m like “oh mah gawd I freaken love fitness lemme take a million classes!!!!!!!!!!!” and then I’ll burnout and get stuck in a rut.
Yup, I’m currently stuck in an “fitness rut” thanks to limited time and limited resources.
Oh, the personal trainer and fitness freak is making excuses about why she isn’t working out ? It’s crazy, but true. My schedule doesn’t exactly make working out easy (waking up at 4:30am for one job and often times not getting home until 9pm from another job) and fitness classes are mad expensive in Manhattan….
So, how does one get outta the rut?
–
- Start Training . Feeling bored? Find a race or competition of sort to train for. It will make every workout feel like you are working towards something specific. For me I am currently training for my first 10k in June.
- Set New Goals. And I’m not just talking weight loss. Are push-ups hard for you? Set a goal of how many push-ups you want to me able to do by the end of summer and start working on that goal. All summer I will be working on my pull-ups so I can start flying out of lines at trapeze.
- Find New Ways to Workout. Sick of the same ole spin class? Try a yoga class. Bored with your instructors zumba routines? Try a strength training class. I am always looking for new classes and luckily springtime means a pleothora of new outdoor workouts… many of which are actually *FREE*. For those of you living in NYC check out Shape Up NYC which offers free workouts. I’m also looking forward to Union Square’s summer bootcamps.
- Acknowledge the rut, but also realize it will pass. I was totally in a fitness rut last September, but sure enough it passed and I found some new favorite classes to keep me going.
I’m definitely ready for this rut feeling to go away, but for now I’m going to focus on 10k training. I looked up some basic mileage plans and now feel more motivated to get out there and run. This week I’m hoping to run 2.5 miles, 2 miles and 4 miles.
how do you get out of a fitness rut?
