So today I decided to kick some butt. This morning I took a nice sweaty barre class to start off my day. I’m going through a serious barre obsession right now and am grateful to have the opportunity to take classes at work. I highly recommend reading this post about barre workouts if your curious about trying one out.
During my first class back in December I was a hot, trembling mess and was shocked at the burn my thighs experienced because it was unlike anything else I had ever endured in a fitness class. Now that I take a few classes a week I can feel my body adapting and changing. I no longer want to cry within the first minute of arms and my legs no longer shake like crazy. It may seem like a nice and easy workout but do not underestimate the power of a good barre class because I always leave there thinking “damn that was shockingly hard!”
After barre class I felt nice and warmed up… and ready for a run! The weather was too purty today to not take advantage of it. My initial plan was 4.5 miles
That’s right baby, 5 MILES! And not to mention in less than 50 minutes! WHO AM I? By the time I got to 3 miles I thought “hmmm, I think I could go for 20 more minutes, why not aim for 5”. I never in my life thought I’d see the day where I ran 5 miles and was still smiling as I walked back home.
My route today was my favorite one yet. I decided to ditch my usual plan of weaving around the nearby streets and instead cut across the East Village to the running path on the East River
The second I hit the path I knew it was a good choice. I loved being on a safe path where I didn’t have to dodge cars and slow walkers. I also appreciated the numerous water fountains since it was a bit toasty out in the middle of the afternoon.
My favorite part though? Being next to the water.
Now I’m looking forward to my next training run ’cause not only do I know I can run 5 miles now, I also have a new favorite running spot!
Back home a cool shower and cold lunch were absolutely necessary for this sweaty runner. I haven’t gone food shopping in over a week so I had to make do with what’s currently in my fridge and make a delicious and filling smoothie from that.
The results? A tasty strawberry vanilla protein smoothie.
- 1 cup almond milk (I used vanilla so delicious almond milk)
- 1 frozen banana
- handful of frozen strawberries
- 1 Packet of Vega vanilla flavored recovery protein
- 1 Spoonful almond butter
I usually use Vega One vanilla protein powder but today used Vega’s vanilla flavored sports recovery protein today. I think the flavor was a bit more enjoyable and gave the smoothie less of a chalky flavor compared to the other protein powders I’ve used.
Finally it was time to head off to work for a quick and easy night shift at the fitness studio. I’m pretty sure I was still buzzing with a runner’s high and still a bit shocked that I actually ran 5 miles today and lived to tell the tale!
