Shana tova to those celebrating Rosh Hashanah! I’m looking forward to a big family dinner in Long Island tomorrow night and spending some quality time with my loved ones celebrating the Jewish New Year. It’s quite fitting that Rosh Hashanah matches up with my first week of being a post-bacc and starting this new path towards becoming a physical therapist.
School
Today was the first day of classes! I had an 8am chemistry lecture followed by bio lecture. That’s a whole lot of science before noon for a girl that avoided all things science in college. It was a bit overwhelming which is to be expected, but I’m really hoping it will start sounding more familiar soon and less like a foreign language. I only graduated college a little over a year ago, but being back in school is still going to take some getting used.
Workout aka the best 6 mile run ever.
If the rest of my training runs go like today did, I think I’m gonna be just fine for this half marathon. My goal today was 6 miles but with a short walking break after every mile. Giving myself permission to take a walk roughly every 10 minutes made the whole run seem less intimidating. I ended up powering through the first 2 miles without needing a break and towards the end took a few more breaks then I care to admit to take sips from the ice cold water fountains.
It was my first time running on the West Side Highway and it was pretty incredible. Perfect weather with no humidity but a slight breeze might’ve helped…
When it comes to running I’m starting to realize that different things work for different people. For someone like me I need to go into the run with a plan- how many breaks can I take? How often can I take them? How far am I going or for how long? Having a plan of 6 miles with quick breaks after every mile helped me SO MUCH mentally. It kept me away from the negative, self sabotaging thoughts and kept me focused on the task at hand. I still got a ways to go before the half marathon, but hopefully today was the start of my new running approach.
After running I took a 45 minute barre class at work. When possible I try to pair up my running days with a barre class to work other muscles but with no impact. It works for me, but I know not everyone would like that pairing since barre tends can seriously work those legs. I tend to feel it more in my abs and shoulders so it’s a nice compliment to running.
With all this working out I worked up quite the appetite.
I had a lovely dinner date with my friend Lauren at Veselka. We were in pierogi HEAVEN… but now I’m in a post-pierogi food coma.
Time to start getting ready for bed, I’ve got chem lab bright and early in the morning!
