Hey friends! I’m currently in Mexico relaxing, tanning, beaching and trapeze-ing, but while I’m away I have a few fun posts lined up for you. Hope you enjoy!

I’ve loved reading people’s predictions about what’s going to be hot (and not) in the world of health and wellness this year. As I learned when I lived in Los Angeles, every city and area has it’s own little fitness culture so here are my predictions for health and wellness trends in NYC.
Decline of spin classes. Spin studios are quickly becoming the “Starbucks” of the NYC fitness scene—it feels like there’s a new studio popping up on every corner. Between powerhouses like Soul Cycle and Flywheel opening up new locations and the increase of smaller studios like Swerve, CYC and Revolve I’m curious if this cycling-mania will die out soon. At the end of the day there’s only so much you can do on a stationary bike…
HIIT is the new “it” workout. HIIT classes pack a punch… and are bringing the crowds. Seeing the wild growth for studios like the Fhitting Room and Exceed I have a feeling this is only the beginning of HIIT studios sweeping the city– and with good reason. HIIT has been proven to be a highly effective form of training. Keep doing that tabata, Manhattan.
Juice-a-day, not juice-all-day. With cold pressed juices becoming more and more readily available to the busy New Yorker, I predict juices will continue to be a staple in the Manhattan diet. Once upon a time juices gained their popularity thanks to strict juice-only cleanses, but I think cleanses will be on the decline while enjoying a juice in the middle of the day will become more common.
Split discipline classes. Cycling plus yoga? TRX plus cycling? I think 2-in-1 workout classes are going to continue to grow in Manhattan since it offers the best of both worlds to the busy New Yorker who may not have time to go to cycling and yoga.
All-in-one fitness memberships. As New York moves towards more fitness studios rather than big box gyms, there’s a need for memberships that cover multiple studios for the person who loves spin, yoga, pilates and HIIT. Services like Fitist and memberships like Classtivity offers a variety of studios to Manhattanites who love to take different types of classes. I wouldn’t be surprised if other cities hop on this approach too.
Tracking devices. Who got a fitbit for the holidays? It seems that the fitbit and other fitness tracking devices were the popular gift of choice this holiday season. Technology has made it easier than ever to track your workouts and steps taken every day. I imagine more and more fitness lovers will be purchasing these kinds of devices to track activity level instead of heart rate monitors.
Lululemon is no longer the only game in town. Between the brand new Athelta in the Flatiron district, Sweaty Betty in SoHo and a new Reebok store to open in Union Square, Lululemon isn’t the only place to buy a cute but functional workout outfit in NYC.
Fitness as every day fashion. It seems that black yoga pants are the new little back dress for New Yorkers. When I first moved to New York City six years ago the thought of going out to eat in workout clothes to class felt bizarre… let alone wearing them to brunch. Comfy spandex isn’t just for the gym anymore thanks to fun print leggings and cute tank tops.
What health and wellness trends do you think will be popular in 2014?
… and which trends do you hope go away in 2014?

Thanks for trends Kayla.
