Hey hey! It feels good to be back writing posts from my comfy apartment couch! Since coming back from vacation I’ve been a bit under the weather and taking it easy, but at least I was healthy on vacay and got to enjoy the sunshine and sand in Meh-he-co (Mexico, get it?)
The mother and I had an AMAZING time in Club Med, Cancun. Since before I was born my family has loved going on Club Med vacations at their various resorts (it’s also how I fell in love with trapeze!) so I was excited to return to Club Med, Cancun for the fourth time. For the record we did invite my dad and big brother but they decided not to join us in paradise– their loss! Also for the record, my mother and I failed to take a picture together. But she was there the whole time, I promise!
When we arrived is was sad and rainy… and stayed that way until our third day. We made the most of it and enjoyed our time outside in between the intense periods of downpour.
A nice post breakfast walk on the beach… before the rain started up again.
On the bright side thanks to the rain I got to go to zumba twice! It was offered the same time as trapeze, so obviously trapeze won, but on the days it was raining and trapeze was cancelled I got to dance it out at the fitness center. Most of the people staying at the resort this past week were French or Argentinian so it was cool taking a zumba class that really relied on visual cueing. Besides saying “left/ right” and counting in English and French everything else was visual. It got me thinking about my own cueing when I’m teaching and how powerful visual cueing can be in zumba. I don’t get many chances to take zumba classes in New York anymore so having the chance on vacation felt like a treat.
I also loved going to “aqua gym” in the pool once the sun came out. I’m not a very strong swimmer and usually avoid going in pools and the beach, but I secretly love water based workouts.
The highlight of my trip was of course FLYING TRAPEZE! As my mother told people we met “some people relax on the beach, Kayla relaxes at trapeze”. It felt like such a treat to fly more than one day in a row with the awesome circus team. I actually flew with one of the girls on the team, Betinha, the last time I was in Cancun 4 years ago.
I decided to work on my layout the first day since it’s the trick I worked on most of the summer and then worked on my half turn the other two days and caught both tricks.
Besides the actual flying aspect, I also loved trapeze because I got to meet a lot of people from all over the world while waiting in line. While I wouldn’t necessarily walk up to a stranger on the beach and make conversation, it’s always easy to chat with the people waiting for their turn.
Before the trip I was a bit concerned about dairy-free options at the resort. While I’ve eaten at Club Med at ton of times at this rate, I haven’t been since I cut back on dairy. After some googling I found out that there was soy milk in the main dining room, so I would be able to make instant iced coffee and I was impressed that there was even lactose-free milk as well, something you rarely see in restaurants here. I took a peak at the Starbucks menu in the airport out of curiosity and they offered both soy milk and lactose-free milk- craziness.
There’s 3 restaurants at the resort but my mom and I decided to stick with the main restaurant which is buffet-style at every meal. Finding dairy-free options ended up being easy-peasy since there was a label next to each dish with the ingredients. It was cool to see how simple the ingredient list were for everything. I loved watching most of the food being prepared fresh and right in front of you by the Club Med Chef’s.
I personally like eating buffet-style because it meant I could try a little bit of everything. Each night had a different theme and speciality dishes to match that theme. Besides the theme there were always staples at every meal to ensure even picky eaters like myself would leave happy.
My mother was thoroughly impressed with my new love of fish. My favorite meal was definitely the seared tuna, delicious.
My other favorite food is Club Med’s infamous white chocolate bread. I deeply considered stealing an entire loaf during my last meal at the resort. I’m more of a bread person than a dessert person, so I happily ended every meal with a delicious slice of white chocolate bread. Can you tell I’m obsessed?
why yes, I did ask my mom to take a picture of my glorious first piece of white chocolate bread 🙂 I might have to try and make one of the recipes I found online so I can introduce the boy to my favorite food.
One of the reasons my family keeps going back to Club Meds (besides the trapeze and white chocolate bread) is the amazing staff called GOs. We got to eat with a few GOs throughout the week and I loved hearing about how they ended up at Club Med. How cool would it be to be a nurse but work at a gorgeous resort in Cancun? I especially loved talking to Minna, originally from Japan, who choreographed and organized all the shows at Club Med. Sounds like my kind of job!
I secretly wish we could have stayed a few more days, but sadly my mom had to go back to work (pshhhh!). As always I come back from Club Med with callused hands from trapeze, listening to “Hands Up” on repeat, and already trying to figure out when I can return. Successful vacation indeed 🙂
