One of my favorite parts about working at ClassPass is seeing what health and fitness trends people are going gaga for at the moment. I’ll say I was actually pretty accurate with my trend predictions for 2014. Here are my predictions for health and wellness trends in 2015.
Treadmill workouts are having a moment. First it was spin, then it was rowing, now treadmills are getting their time in the limelight. These super sweaty workouts focusing on sprints and intervals are a runners best friend in the winter and take the dread out of dread mill.
Sure places like Barry’s Bootcamp have been around town for awhile, but now there’s the brand new NYC studio Mile High Run Club and even gyms like Equinox are taking note and hopping on the treadmill class bandwagon. With Orange Theory opening on 23rd Street in near future, and studios like Shred 415 in Chicago and Sweat Garage in LA also drawing a huge crowd, I officially name 2015 the year of the treadmill.

Fitness wear is fashionably acceptable. When I first moved to NYC I wouldn’t have been caught dead wearing athletic pants besides when I was heading to the gym. Now, 6 years later, black yoga pants are totally acceptable for casual days. My office is obviously a bit more lax than most (yes, I wore athletic shorts to work over the summer and it was awesome) but I know a few other friends that can get away wearing nice yoga pants with a cute top to work as well these days. I think it will become even more acceptable in 2015. Yoga pants as every day wear is a trend that is here to stay!
Fast food is going healthy. While places like Chipotle and Cosi have always offered heathy-ish alternatives to the typical fast food options, NYC is now home to a number of fast but super healthy and organically conscious food joints. Anyone that’s waited in line at Sweet Green knows that New Yorkers are craycray for these organic and delicious salads. Dig Inn has become a fan favorite at my office thanks their healthy, vegan-friendly and organic options. Places like Lemonade in LA have known all along that fast doesn’t mean healthy should go out the window.
My dream is for even more Sweet Greens to pop up around Manhattan, plus I’m sure some others will follow suit with similar equally yummy ideas.
Quick and Dirty Workouts are in. Who has time to spend hours at the gym? No one, that’s who. I’ve noticed an influx of 45 minute classes at my gym that really pack a punch and classes in Manhattan that are determined to do away with the thought that two-a-days are necessary. People are starting to realize that it’s not about how long you workout but how intensely you workout and making every second count!
Cooking at home is easier than ever. We’ve all heard about Blue Apron, the startup that’s making cooking at home even easier by offering pre-portioned ingredients and easy to follow recipes. Similar companies are working hard to make cooking at home as easy as possible. In 2015 this trend will only become even more mainstream and hopefully affordable. The second Blue Apron offers a dairy-free option I’m totally in!
Your company will invest in your health. More and more companies are encouraging their employees to be healthy by offering highly discounted gym memberships and incentives to get working out. Many of these companies might also look into enrolling their employees in a Wellness Retreat that may help provide them with various perspectives on lifestyle habits and how they could incorporate the same for working to their full potential. In 2015 this trend will only continue to spread throughout the workforce and cheers to that. Healthy employees are bound to be happier– and nothing gets you over that midday slump like a lunchtime workout.
Sitting is the new smoking. I bet this is the phrase you will be hearing this year from your favorite fitness trainer. Many of us, myself included, spent most of the day hunched over the keyboard. While we still devote a fair amount of time to working out and put in the effort to eat right, it still doesn’t undo the fact that we spent 10+ hours a day sitting. More trainers will start preaching about the dangers of sitting all day. I bet standing desks become more and more acceptable as people catch on to this health concern.
Socializing is going healthy. I was so amazed at how many young professionals were having a blast at a 7AM sober dance party when I attended my first Daybreaker event. I had a seriously great time and think they will be throwing even more pre-work raves in 2015. Besides getting your dance on before work, more and more people will be hitting up spin after work rather than the bar… or at least going to spin class before the bar.
I’d love to hear your thoughts– What do you think will be hot (or not) in the health and wellness scene in 2015?
