My workout wardrobe isn’t that exciting. While I certainly own a lot of spandex and yoga pants, I tend to stick to Lululemon, Nike, Athleta and C9 from Target out of pure laziness and convenience. I’m always on the prowl for new-to-me fitness brands and funky styles so I don’t feel like a cookie cutter fitness gal wearing the same thing as everyone else.
When I heard about Sweatstyle I was super excited to sign up. Created by Helena Cawley, one of the fabulous ladies behind Uplift Studios, it’s basically Stitchfix for fitness fanatics and a great way to discover new fitness brands.
How it works:
First, fill out a profile based on what kinds of workouts you do and your style preference
Then the Sweatstyle team selects 5 items based on these preference– a mix of tops, bottoms, sports bras and outerwear.
You have 5 days after receiving the package to decide whether or not you want to keep everything. If you don’t like something, you just send it back in a prepaid bag and only pay for what you’re keeping. Like Stitchfix there is a $20 styling fee, however it’s used towards any items you keep, so as long as you keep one item it’s no loss. If you keep everything in the box you get a 15% discount on the total purchase as well.
So, what’d I get?
Top: Vimmia Shanti Hoodie in Charcoal ($110): Practically feather-light, these cropped leggings provide all the compression you need for your most high intensity workouts. The moisture wicking fabric has also been shown to aid lactic acid removal so you can push through one more set.
Bottom: Pheel Getaway Pant in Black/White ($95): This hoodie boasts all the right design details including a semi-open back, oversized hood and contrasting trim, while keeping it sophisticated in a heather grey, soft terry. Perfect for keeping spring breezes at bay.
I especially loved the “peekaboo” back on the sweatshirt, it was a bit different than any hoodie I own. I could picture myself throwing this on during breezy nights in the summer as well as before a fitness class. Versatile is always a big plus. It’s a bit more expensive than what I typically pay for a sweatshirt, but I decided to go with it.
I ended up loving the pants more than I thought I would. At first I wasn’t sure about how light they felt– while they weren’t see through (trust me I kept checking in the mirror) they felt super light weight which is something I’m not used to in a workout pant. After wearing them to workout this week I’m so happy I decided to keep them. In the summer I still prefer to wear crops rather than shorts while working out and I think these will become a new summer favorite.
Vimmia Capri Legging in Solstics ($85): We love vimmia leggings for their compressive performance fabric, and the fresh print on these only makes them better. With comfortable flat seams and a wide, smoothing waistband.
My eyes literally lit up when I took these pants out of the box. HOW amazing is that print? Please please please fit! I’m sometimes iffy about wild print leggings, while I love them in theory and on other people, they don’t always translate well on my body.
They fit perfectly, and I like that they have a little bit of compression. I haven’t had the chance to test them out in class yet, mainly because I don’t want to waste them on any old workout 🙂 Definitely a keeper!
The other two tops I was sent I didn’t love the fit– just didn’t look right on me and I generally prefer fitted workout tops. I didn’t end up snapping a picture of them before sending them back, but here are the two tops for reference:
PrismSport Racerback Top in Blush:
Pheel Breathe Tank in White:
If they would have fit a bit better I possible would have kept them.
Overall, Sweatstyle is great for the fellow fitness junkie looking to update their wardrobe and explore some lesser known fitness brands creating cool stuff. The price point is a little bit expensive for me since I am fortunate to have a trainer discount at some fitness stores, however I do feel the pieces I ended up keeping were worth their value. I’m excited to see what’s next for Sweatstyle since they are still super new and just getting started.
