Hola friends, hope you’re all having a lovely week so far! So far mission: less crazy weeknights is going well and I’m feeling way more relaxed than I was last week.
Before I jump into today’s post recapping the Ketanga Krawl this weekend, I wanted to share this week’s lunch which I eluded to on Sunday.
I more or less mimicked the savory overnight oats from “But I Could Never Go Vegan” and am happy to say that although it doesn’t look pretty, it taste great and is super easy to throw together.
In an airtight container throw in: 1/3 cup cooked quinoa, 1/3 uncooked oats, 1/2 cup chickpeas, 1/2 cup flavorless almond milk, 1/2 cup veggie broth, 2 TB nutritional yeast, 2 TB chopped roasted red peppers (I used the canned stuff), 2 TB sun dried tomatoes, 2 TB pitted olives, 1 TB liquid amines, spices for flavor (I used pepper + italian blend)
Let the jar sit overnight, sealed, and when it’s lunch time nuke this bad boy for 3-4 minutes. The hardest part was chopping everything up and even that wasn’t too too bad. I’m excited to try a few variations based on the quinoa and oatmeal base, love me so overnight oats.
Now onto the crawl…
On Saturday I woke up super early for the first ever Ketanga Fitness Krawl in Union Square! It was a sweat filled morning of 30 minute workouts at Core Pilates, Tonehouse and CrossFit Union Square, aka death by fitness. Ketanga specializes in amazing sounding fitness retreats with top instructors in exotic locations.
First up was a mat class at Core Pilates. Secretly I was really excited to “ease” into the day with the least intense of the three classes to start. Pilates was the perfect way to get my body moving and core engaged while limbering up my muscles for what was yet to come.
I’ve never taken a Core Pilates class and was super impressed by the studio space– high ceilings, beautiful wood floors all around and lots of sunlight.
Next up was Tonehouse, which I was super nervous for! My first (and only) visit to Tonehouse can simple be described as humbling. Ask anyone that’s been there and they will agree, the warmup is the hardest part and it’s HARD. Even though the class was only 30 minutes, the warmup was not scaled down by any means. We also did 1 round of circuits with the resistance bands + TRX suspension trainers and topped it all off with some sprints across the room.
For all the hyping up I’ve done about how scary Tonehouse is, I have to say how surprised I’ve been with the instructors both times. They aren’t the drill sergeants you’d expect for such a hard class. Our instructor Saturday, Yussef, is an undeniably nice guy. He encouraged a team atmosphere, bringing us in for group huddles and group chants.
While I wouldn’t recommend Tonehouse to a total fitness newbie, for anyone with a solid base it’s really not as scary as I make it sound. Yussef never yelled at someone when they took a break, however he did call me out for being lazy while we were doing the above thingy with resistance bands. To be exact he said “You’re stronger than that, I can literally see your muscles”. Busted by my bulging biceps once again.
30 minutes of Tonehouse was the perfect amount of Tonehouse if you ask me– enough to make you break a sweat, but not totally y’know break your body in the process.
We finished up at CrossFit Union Square, located inside the newish Reebok. I’m not a huge fan of CrossFit mainly because of my previous shoulder injury and limitations, but like CrossFit inspired workouts, which is what we did Saturday. First up was a warm up with squats and “good mornings” aka deadlifts with a band around your whole body to activate your hammies.
Next we worked on our deadlifts with the barbell. There were a bunch of coaches present which made for a lot of personal attention and corrections which deadlifting. Not too shabby for a large class.
We topped it off with a WOD in teams of 3- Rowers, kettle bell holds (literally holding 2 kettle bells) and burpees where you had to jump over a box as well.
Needless to say I was a mixture of hungry and tired after my morning of working out and ready for both brunch and a bed. I had a blast though working out with a few other fitness junkies and checking out workouts I otherwise would not have.
