I was at a Bridal Shower in Long Island all day and when I got back to Manhattan I literally couldn’t resist going out for a run. The weather was just to dang beautiful to not hit the pavement on the West Side Highway and I was feeling mucho inspired by all my friends who ran 10 milers, half marathons and marathons today.
It was actually my first outdoor run of the year. At first it sucked, my calves felt tight which hasn’t happened during my recent treadmill runs, I felt like my cardio endurance was nonexistent, and running felt just plain hard. 1 mile in the run I was suddenly filled with fear that training for my June half marathon, let alone a marathon in November, was a silly, silly idea.
But then it clicked. My body remembered how to run. My calves loosened up, even my breathing felt less strained.
Hearing the Nike lady (yes I still run with the Nike app… I know I need to buy a fancy watch!) say 6 miles complete felt like the biggest accomplishment ever. I didn’t think I had 3 miles in me, let alone 6.
Our bodies are strange, they are a lot stronger than most of us give ’em credit for and they can do pretty extraordinary things. I know training for the marathon and even this upcoming half won’t always be easy at times. I’ll want to quit, turn around early during runs, slow down and walk. My body can do this. And that’s what I have to keep remembering from now until November 1st.
