Club Med Cancun, I miss you already.
Jeremy and I had an amazing time celebrating our birthaversary (birthday + anniversary of course) in Club Med Cancun. I’ve travelled to the resort a few times with my parents and also have visited a few different Club Meds when I was growing up. I was pretty excited to share that magic with Jeremy and show him why I love it so much.
Our vacation was the perfect mix of relaxation and fun.
Some highlights from the vacay:
— eating lots of food. Oh so much bread I was in heaven. Club Med loves bread the way I love bread and there’s literally a table dedicated to it at every meal. We ate most of our meals at the buffet which I love because it lets me try out a little bit of everything.
I’m always really impressed with Club Med’s variety of food options for everyone at every meal. I noticed they also added Almond Milk to their dairy-free friendly options along with Soy and Lactose Free which they had last year when I went. I was a happy camper. I can’t speak for all dietary restrictions, but it was really easy to navigate the dairy-free options at the buffet since things are really well labelled. If I had a serious allergy I’m sure the many chefs on duty would also be able to help me out as well.
— Lots and lots of beach reading time.
— Aqua Gym. Secretly, or not so secretly, I love water workouts. I hate swimming and can’t really swim, but I love doing ridiculous exercises in 4 feet of water. It seems like barre has definitely influenced the aqua workout world and a lot of our moves involved similar pulsing while holding onto the side.
Mayhaps an idea for a new boutique fitness studio 🙂 #underwaterbarre. I kid, I kid.
I swear there were other youngish people at Aqua Gym…
— Snorkeling. This kind of terrified me because of the whole I can’t swim thing and it took me a while to get the breathing method down, but once I calmed down it was so beautiful and peaceful skimming the water. Plus I looked mucho attractive in my gear
–kayaking. Jeremy and I love to go kayaking in my grandma’s quaint lake… the ocean was a bit rockier and required more muscle power.
— iguanas. There were SO many iguanas near our room. We actually counted 15 on our 5 minute walk from the room to dinner one evening. We referred to them as the squirrels of Mexico.
— sunset dinner at the resort’s Argentinian Steakhouse La Estancia. Steak for the guy, tuna for the lady.
— TRAPEZE! Jeremy is totally aware that one of the reasons I really wanted to go to Club Med was because I could fly every single day.
The circus staff as always was awesome, I love bonding with them and getting to know the crew throughout the week since I of course didn’t go a day without flying. While hanging around the trapeze area you also get to meet other guests. A lot of people like me are addicted to trapeze and plan their vacation around it while others are curious first timers. I’ve always found trapeze to be a great opportunity to meet others at Club Med.
Jeremy even tried out trapeze for the first time!! He’s obviously seen me fly a lot over the past 4 years but never tried it out himself. So proud of him for taking the leap!
I worked out my layout all week and finally caught it on my second to last day. Ask any flyer, the layout is such a pesky pesky trick, one that you will forever be working on and perfecting.
I also got to perform in the trapeze show one of the nights. I don’t know what I was more excited about– performing or wearing hot pink spandex
So I think it’s safe to say we had a great time 🙂
Throughout the vacation I was thinking about how my philosophy regarding working out on vacation has definitely changed over the years. While there was a gym on site that had free classes and equipment, I decided to sleep in instead. Sure my vacation was fairly active– Aqua Gym, some paddling on a boat and trapeze, but certainly very different from my typically very active life.
Breaking my workout routine used to scare me. Would I come back weak and losing everything I worked so hard for? I’m convinced working out has helped calm some of my anxiety issues, but would skipping morning workouts leave me antsy? While I wouldn’t say I drove myself crazy to fit in workout time on previous vacations, it was something I tried to stick to.
This time though I decided to relax. Spending time with my boyfriend was more important than doing some bicep curls at the gym.
I still love checking out fitness studios when I’m visiting a different city, it’s one of my favorite parts of traveling and I’m curious about the boutique fitness industry in other cities, but when there’s a choice between working out in the hotel gym and sleeping in, sleeping in is probably going to win these days.
Working out would still be waiting for me when I got back to New York.
Okay and one last gorgeous beach picture and then I’m done, promise!
