During the summer I want to spend as much time as humanly possible outside. I absolutely love taking fitness classes outside after feeling cooped up all winter. I went to high school with one of the co-founders of SpotYoga and he invited me to take one of their yoga classes last week on the rooftop of lnk48.
SpotYoga has patterned up with a number of fun event spaces such as hotel rooftops and penthouses to offer unique outdoor yoga classes. I’ve never been to the lnk48 hotel and was basically floored when I walked into the penthouse and out to the terrace. Even I was impressed… and I’m a pretty jaded New Yorker who has seen her fair share of stunning city rooftop views.
Our mats were already set up when we walked in with everything we could possibly need for class– yoga block, towel and a morning liquiteria juice. I totally misjudged the weather and thought it might be a little chilly on the rooftop to start class but it ended up being gorgeous and sunny. I personally don’t mind basking in the sun in downward dog 🙂
The flow was slower than the typical NYC vinyasa power yoga classes I’ve grown used to. We held each pose for a few more breaths than I usually do. This made the class surprisingly challenging despite the slower pace. I was working up a sweat and super grateful for the free towel as I dripped on my mat.
Being so high up gave the class a sense of calm that’s basically impossible at any other NYC yoga class. I know in my apartment I’m constantly hearing sirens, honking and people being plain loud. Much of that excess noise disappears 27 floors above Manhattan.
I walked back to the subway feeling pretty blissed out. Turns out, serenity and a sense of calm can exist in the middle of midtown Manhattan.
