It’s time for my first marathon training post! Every Monday I’ll be checking in, talking about my training, how things are going, and all other things marathon.
The beginning of marathon training is kind of awesome. I don’t feel overwhelmed, the mileage is really manageable and there was nothing remotely daunting about my plan for this week. Having taken a few weeks off of running, I was pleasantly surprised with how good my body felt while pounding the pavement this week. The hardest part was dealing with insane humidity during my short run on Tuesday. Training in the summer means I’ll feel nice and speedy come fall though 🙂
For my “long” run Saturday I met up with fellow Team in Training runners. I rarely run with other people so it was a nice change and I found running in a pace group super helpful. It kept me from slowing down or taking too many walking breaks. As the season goes on I’ll mix it up with doing my long runs both alone and with the team.
Earlier this week I stopped by Jack Rabbit for new shoes. I can’t stress enough how important it is to get fitted for running shoes. My Mizuno Wave Inspires had seriously bit the the dust, something I realized way too late in the game while I was training for my recent half. Take it from me, don’t run a half marathon on old shoes. It sucks.
Running shoes are super personal, what works for one person might not work for someone else. My friend Sarah swears by Mizuno Wave Inspires, I grew to hate them and new I needed a different kind of shoe this time around.
I was video taped running for about a minute on the treadmill wearing neutral sneakers. After analyzing my running form in slow-mo, it was obvious that my old Mizunos were not the right shoe for me and I can wear something more neutral.
After trying on a few pairs of neutral sneakers on the treadmill I decided to purchase both the Mizuno Wave Rider and Saucony Ride 8.
Originally I was going to purchase 1 pair of running shoes now and a second towards the end that I would wear on race day. After much discussion I decided it’s not a bad idea to train in two different sneakers and choose which ones I love more on race day. Both options are pretty similar overall and apparently it’s not a bad idea for your feet to switch it up while training.
This week I also received the exciting news that I got into the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco!
I was literally dancing around my room screaming “I GOT IN!!!” when I found out. I’ve never been to San Francisco before so better way to explore than run 13.1 miles around the city? I already know a few other bloggers running the race and think it will be a pretty amazing weekend seeing all the sights with my parents and hanging out with blogger friends.
I hear the course is hella hilly and will treat it as more of a training run than an all our race. I’m thinking of it as a warmup run for the New York City Marathon two weeks later 🙂
This Week’s Plan

TUESDAY: Shrink Session at The Movement
WEDNESDAY: Yoga + Trapeze
THURSDAY: LONG RUN- 7 Miles

Congrats on getting in to Nike SF! That race is on my bucket list. Shoe shopping is hard. I was going to try a different shoe this year but ended up ordering something that I ran in last year after all.

Great start to your training! Congrats on getting into SF! I would love to run that one someday.
I am also training for NYC, but I’ve been in training now for about 5 weeks. I use the Galloway training method for my races. Definitely excited about NY! ☺

Best of luck training for NYC!!!
