I strive to eat a fair amount of fruits and veggies every day… but that doesn’t always happen. Smoothies and juices have been one of the easiest ways for me to amp up my nutrient intake. I don’t always have the time to make myself an elaborate breakfast, but quickly blending up a smoothies is a pretty easy way to get a serving (or two) or fruits and veggies. My go-to is almond milk, banana and spinach because I’m not very adventurous and hate buying excess produce I can’t use up.
Green Blender sends you a box of perfectly portioned out fruits and veggies and 5 unique smoothie recipes recipes. I’ve been curious to try their subscription service so was pretty psyched when they reached out to me to try out the service for myself.
How Green Blender Works
Green Blender is a weekly subscription service, similar to Blue Apron or Hello Fresh. Every week you get 5 new smoothie recipes with pre-portioned ingredients for a total of 10 smoothie servings.
Your box comes with a recipe card with information about each recipe including calories, farm carbs and protein. There might be a tiny bit of chopping involved but otherwise all you have to do is combine the ingredients with water + ice for a fresh smoothie.
Green Blender costs $49 a week for 5 smoothies and 10 servings.
The Smoothies
As part of Jeremy’s official Blogger Boyfriend duties, I asked him to help me taste test all the smoothies in my box. I thought it would be fun to get the perspective of someone that’s not a fitness blogger and has never had a green smoothie or juice in his life. So behold, Jeremy + My reviews of all 5 smoothies in my Green Blender box.
PS- you can find their recipes both on the Green Blender website and on instagram
Oh My Darlin’ Clementine
Ingredients:
- beets
- clementine
- pineapple
- cashews
- ginger
- water + ice
Jeremy– it’s very beet-y. I like it!
Kayla- It’s really flavorful! I don’t love clementine but am happy to say it tastes more like the beets.
Almond Oat Elixir
Ingredients:
- banana
- yellow squash
- rolled oats
- lucuma
- cinnamon
- almond
- water + ice
Jeremy- Oooh, I like this flavor more, it’s a little bit less intense
Kayla- Not as flavorful as the first, but I love the almond and cinnamon. I think this is more my jam.
Heat, Refreshed
Ingredients:
- lacinato kale
- celery
- apple
- persian cucumber
- juiced lemon
- cayenne
- flaxseed
- water + ice
Jeremy- Celery! I taste the celery. It kind of reminds me of a Bloody Mary.
Kayla- $@% that’s spicy! [waits 3 minutes and tries again] No seriously, it’s spicy. I wish I could taste the apple more
[Jeremy takes the extra for himself because he really likes this one]
Honey Prickly Pear
Ingredients:
- swiss chard
- prickly pear
- honeydew
- juiced lemon
- chlorella
- hemseed
- 1 cup water + 1 cup ice
Jeremy— I can definitely taste the melon, it’s not my favorite of the batch but it’s not bad.
Kayla- Mmmm I love the melon. I’ve never had prickly pear before
Good Grape
Ingredients:
- collard greens
- pear
- grapes
- camu camu
- walnuts
- almond milk
- ice
Jeremy – Mmmmm. Very almond-y [it’s weird I can never taste the almond aspect of almond milk… he also could only have 1 sip because he’s very mildly allergic to almonds]
Kayla- Love me some almond milk smoothies! I like the creamy base a lot.
My favorite— Beets don’t kale my vibe! I loved “Oh My Darlin’ Clementine” and “Good Grape”
Jeremy’s Favorite— “Oh My Darlin’ Clementine” and “Heat Refreshed”
What I didn’t love…
- 10 servings is a lot to handle. I live alone and Jeremy isn’t even here every weekend. It’s too much for me to consume alone but is great if you live with others or have children in the mix.
- There’s still some chopping and rinsing involved.
- You can’t pick your recipes— you might like some smoothies more than others
- Delivers on Wednesdays which is a bit awkward to plan out your week around.
What I loved about it
- Unique recipes. I’m lazy when it comes to recipe creation and stick to a few staples. I liked that the recipes were super unique.
- Try new things. A lot of these ingredients were totally foreign to me so it was exciting to try things like Prickly Pear and camu camu for the first time.
- It’s healthy. All of the smoothies were under 200 calories except the almond oat elixir. The recipe cards also explain the unique nutrition value of the ingredients — like how Cayenne boosts your metabolism and soothes upset stomachs.
Bottom line
I enjoyed the smoothies far more than I thought I would– and was shocked at how much my steak + potatoes loving boyfriend enjoyed them as well. For my own lifestyle, the serving size is a bit much, but I know this is something that the company is working on. If so I could definitely so myself ordering every few weeks for a healthy boost.
