The Scoop:
PSA – Megaformer classes are hard. I always go in thinking the class will be no big deal and I won’t sweat so I can plan to like go to synagogue immediately after… and then I end up sweating profusely and go to temple looking like a hot mess instead. Yes, this actually happened.
As if the megaformer wasn’t hard enough, the brains behind this torture contraption created a new fun fitness toy that’s some how even more challenging– enter the supraformer. If the megaformer is pilates on crack, I don’t even know what metaphor is appropriate to describe the supraformer.
The supraformer, only available at the Lagree Studio in Los Angeles as of right now, packs a punch and in only 25 minutes.

The Machine:
The supraformer is similar to the typical megaformer (photo here) but the HUGE difference is it moves in all planes of motion, similar to when you change the incline on a treadmill. The instructor uses their fancy tablet to control this mechanism and it makes every move even more challenging.
The Class:
I’m always weary of 25-minute classes– how hard can they really be. While the classes isn’t the hardest class out there (that title is reserved for Tone House in NYC), I did feel like I got a legit workout in only 25 minutes. It’s pretty rare for a workout to make my abs sore these days and I’m happy to report this class left me with some burning abs the next day.
The majority of the moves were similar to a typical megaformer class, but with that added twist of having the machine slant and move to make it even more difficult. Hi, gravity.
I don’t take megaformer classes all that often and struggled with a few moves thanks to my wonky rotator cuff. Luckily you can make the incline less “steep” if you’re really struggling with a move.
Instructor, Shane, explained to me that with all tilting and moving from the machine, more muscles can be targeted without having to change the move you’re doing. What once was just a lower body exercise can also then challenge the abs and upper body. Total body workout for the win!
By the end of class I was grateful it was only 25 minutes long. It was still SO challenging even given the really short class time. It’s 25 minutes of non-stop action.
After class I chatted with Shane for a bit. He explained to me that one of the reasons Sebastian Lagree created this machine was to offer a more effective and efficient workout in less the time, thus making it also a more affordable option. At $18 a pop it’s a great deal, especially considering megaformer classes in NYC are $40.
Bottom Line:
Can the supraformer please make it’s way to NYC? If I could find an effective, 25-minute workout in NYC that only costs $18 I would be ALL over that. West Hollywood, consider yourself lucky to have this gem.
