Class Review: Prevail, Los Angeles
The Scoop
Lemme start off by saying I loved Prevail so much that I feel the need to state my love for Prevail as my first sentence of this here review. Sometimes a workout just leaves you feeling nothing but love for the studio, and this was one of those times.
I’ve taken a handful of boxing workouts in NYC (hey Shadowbox, TITLE and Overthrow!) but Prevail takes the cake. Imma switch it up from my typical class review format and will instead focus on 5 reasons why Prevail is the best boxing class I’ve ever taken. Seriously.

Why Prevail is the bomb diggity
Reason #1: They take care of newbies.
This class is really great for people that both know the basic punches and for those who have NO idea what they’re doing.
Before class the instructor took me and all the other newbies through the basics (and he quickly figured out that I knew my jab from my cross…) Boxing can be intimidating if you don’t know what’s going on and don’t understand the difference between the punches, it was great that the instructor took the time out before class to go over the basics.
During the class everyone was split into preassigned groups and all the new people were in the same group. We got extra care and attention because of this. There’s nothing worse than being the new person in a class and being totally clueless about form and what to do next. Three cheers for a newbie friendly class.
Reason #2: The class format is the perfect blend of boxing and fitness.
When I take a boxing class I care more about the fitness aspect of it than nitty gritty “technique.” It’s the sad truth of boxing as a fitness class and the reality that I will probably never be stepping into a boxing ring.
Prevail did a great job of being both a boxing centric class while also incorporating tons of conditioning elements. My general complaint about boxing classes I’ve taken is that my arms are SO burnt out by the end of it from all the punching, but my legs feel neglected.
After a warmup which utilized cardio and some boxing. we worked our way through 2 totally different circuits for the meat of the workout. The first one was super boxing focused —
- Station 1 – 3 punch combos (i.e. linking together 3 punches at a time)
- Station 2 – Doing specific 3 punch combos that were written on a board
- Station 3- an ab exercise of sort
- Station 4- working on punches with an instructor holding up pads
- Station 5- Curtsey lunges
After doing this circuit 3 times, we took off our boxing gloves for a more conditioning focused circuit which incorporated exercise bands for bicep work, dumbbells for variations on renegade rows and tricep exercises, and an ab focused station as well.
All in all it was a well rounded workout and the perfect blend of boxing meets boutique fitness.
Reason #3: There’s an instructor AND an assistant in every class.
I was amazed to see there was an assistant instructor who walked around throughout class giving modifications, corrections and general motivation. There’s a lot going on at any given moment — 5 circuits to be exact, so having 2 people there to facilitate all of this was really great plus it gave us the chance to work on our punches with someone holding up pads.
In a class of 24+ people I felt like I got tons of personal attention thanks to having 2 instructors in the room.
Reason #4: Cleanliness.
Why do boxing gyms STINK? Serious question.
Prevail passed my cleanliness inspection and I was impressed that even their gloves and wraps, which I had to borrow, weren’t stinky. Thank god because I’m kind of a germaphobe and usually use my own gloves when I’m working out here in New York.
Reason #5: Feel Good Atmosphere.
9/10 classes I’ve taken in LA, the staff and people in class have been the most lovely human beings ever. Prevail was no exception and everyone was kind and helpful– from the front desk staff to both instructors.
Even before class I was thoroughly impressed. Instead of a clusterfuck of people needing help with their wraps, it was super organized and you signed up on a list to get help. One of these days I’ll remember how to do my wraps.
It can be easy to feel defeated after a workout, especially considering I don’t box all that often, but I left Prevail in the best mood ever. I’m a believer that a little bit of positive motivation and “You’re doing great, Kayla” can go a long long way.
Bottom Line
I got nothing but love for this studio and would absolutely be a regular if I lived in LA. For the price and the quality of workout, it’s a win win.

I had a similar experience when I went to my first boxing class in NYC at Work Train Fight! Would love to hear your thoughts on it if you ever get there!

I haven’t been to Work Train Fight in ages! If I remember correctly, I don’t think I loved the instructor (who knows if he even still works there!) but enjoyed the format. I need to take another class there soon!
