The Wellness Files // a wellness-focused interview series featuring the badass ladies that inspire me.
I’m an introverted transparency-junkie (and business coach) helping female entrepreneurs harness their strengths, personality and energy to easily + authentically market their work to exactly the people who need it.
My mission is to help you all stand out (without selling out) in a crowded online space. And my favorite way to do that is through SEO. It’s all about helping the people who are already searching find your solutions.
While I love working with woman one-on-one, I only have so many hours in a day. So I’m thrilled to now be offering a 6 week DIY SEO course that teaches you how to get found, grow traffic and gain clients through building a strong SEO foundation.
▶︎ How did you get to where you are today — “running your own show”? Did you take courses on SEO or totally learn on the job?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial side, so I think it was inevitable. I do have a degree in marketing, but almost all of what I do today is self-taught or learned from mentors.
I started freelancing with SEO in 2011 and took my business full time in late 2012. Digital marketing changes SO quickly, so I’ve continued my education with online courses and research.
I also became an IIN certified holistic health coach in 2014, but I saw such a need for help with the business side of things that I stuck with marketing and narrowed my niche to wellness-minded female entrepreneurs.
▶︎ What advice do you have for someone that wants your job?
It’s a slow process with a lot of ups and downs. Identify your intentions for starting your own business and stick to them. Knowing your “why” will keep you going during the downs. Appreciate the ups, no matter how small the accomplishments may seem, and be grateful for the process.
Also, keep your full time job for as long as you can! It doesn’t mean you “haven’t made it.” You will need to take risks, but having that security in the beginning will give you more mental space to continue defining your purpose and business.
▶︎What’s the best and worst part about running your own business?
The best parts of running my own business are:
- getting to set my own hours
- having creative freedom
- getting to work with so many inspiring women
The worst parts are:
- often burning out from working around the clock
- how lonely it can get working from home (despite being an extreme introvert!)
- growing pains (finding the right help, saying no to new work, streamlining processes)
▶︎ What advice do you have for people looking to start their own business?
Just start. You’re never going to be 100% ready, and the best way to learn is by doing.
You’re going to make mistakes, but you’ll learn from them. You also don’t have to know exactly what you want to do or who you want to work with. That will evolve with time.
▶︎ Where does your motivation to lead a healthy life come from?
Over the years I’ve found that when I feel my best, both mentally and physically, I do my best work. Running a business can be extremely stressful and long hours take a toll on your body, so a healthy lifestyle is vital for staying sane and productive.
▶︎ How has instagram played a role in your wellness journey?
Instagram is great for inspiration! I love following food, exercise, and positive mindset accounts.
▶︎ What’s your proudest fitness moment?
I PR’d a 135″ back squat this year! This was after starting 6 months before with the 35″ bar and terrible form, so it was a big accomplishment for me.
▶︎ What work out, if any, are you currently obsessed with?
I was obsessed with Crossfit and acro-yoga over the past 2 years, but now I’m on the hunt for something new to mix it up! However, I have been enjoying just lifting at the gym with my boyfriend for now.
▶︎ When you’re tight on time but want a healthy, homemade dinner, what do you make?
Some kind of thrown-together mix of quinoa / quinoa pasta and veggies. Thankfully I have a boyfriend who’s a wonderful cook and tries to keep me fed, though!
▶︎ What’s the last great book you read?
Oh man, I could go on about books for hours. I’m reading the Harry Potter series right now and totally obsessed. I had never read past book 4 when I was younger, so it’s exciting to have 3 I’ve never read.
As for non-fiction, I read Rising Strong by Brene Brown recently and recommend it to everyone! She makes tough subjects like vulnerability, fear and rejection so approachable.
▶︎ What beauty products do you swear by?
I finally found a face moisturizer my skin likes. Lush Skin Drink is perfect for my dry skin and annoying redness.
▶︎ What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“You can’t pour from an empty vessel.”
LIGHTNING ROUND!
Barre or Yoga? Yoga
Spin class or run? Neither? haha.
AM or PM workout? PM
Smoothie or juice? Smoothie
Group fitness or solo workout? Solo or small class
