Without fail every August I get weepy about summer ending. I’m trying REAL hard not to dote on summer ending and instead I remind myself it’s been one bombass summer. And let’s be honest, it ain’t over ’til I put my Birkenstocks away and I’m wearing jeans again.
Here’s what went down in July:
Favorite Things from July
Fashion I’m Loving
Simple black dresses (<— this one is from American Eagle and less than $40)
Ah, the simple black summer dress. The best. I’ve been wearing this dress as both a cover-up over my bathing suit and on those sweltering hot NYC days when nothing feels comfy. It’s become my go-to this summer.
What I Read…
How To Be Everything by Emilie Wapnick
Oh man, this book was SO refreshing, and so needed for me. How To Be Everything is for all my multi-passionate friends out there who want their career to be a hodgepodge of many thangs.
For me this book was comforting. I don’t need to be just one thing — a social media strategist. A blogger. A yoga teacher. A wellness event curator. Instead I can combine these things to create a career I’m mucho passionate about.
The book shows all sorts of different ways it can be done and has great insight of real peeps doing just this. I highly highly recommend this book to my fellow lost souls that can’t imagine doing just one thing for the rest of their life. Ya dig?
Get Your Sh*t Together by Sarah Knight.
I liked Sarah Knight’s previous book The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck (<— full review there!) but LOVED Get Your Sh*t Together.
First, it’s hilarious. Like, I awkwardly laughed out loud MANY times in Jeremy’s presence causing him to give me some weird looks.
I think I do a good job of giving off the vibe that I have my shit together, much like Simon in Alvin in the Chipmunks (an ongoing brilliant metaphor in the book). The reality is, I’m a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown the majority of the time. This book addresses humans like me, but also talks about all kinds of ways to get your shit together.
Do I have my shit together? Nah. Will I ever have my shit together? Who knows. But I liked the attainable approach to making small goals this book preaches. Def recommend.
Fitness Junkie by Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza
I’ve been waiting for this book. I LOVED Sykes and Piazza’s previous book The Knockoff (<— read my review). When your favorite authors team up to write about your industry? I was PUMPED.
I usually only share books I’ve already finished but I cannot resist mentioning Fitness Junkie now even though I have 100 pages to go. I’ll do a full review next month, but in the meantime lemme tell ya this book is a freaking hilarious satire of my life in the fitness industry. If you’ve made your rounds to the various studios in Manhattan and gone out of your way to get some bone broth, this is the book for you.
What I Watched…
On the movie front I saw Wonder Woman and War for the Planet of the Apes. I wanted to love Wonder Woman more than I did — but I also didn’t hate it. Possibly the best part of Wonder Woman is it’s success and all the badass females it will inspire because of this.
Jeremy and I have been following the new Planet of the Apes trilogy since we first started dating almost 6 years ago. War for the Planet of the Apes was a satisfying and emotional ending to this story.

On the Broadway front I finally saw The Great Comet. Two of my teachers from college are on the creative team — the director and choreographer. I can’t believe it took me so long to finally see this show. It was WILD. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it, I’ve heard mixed things from people that didn’t go to my theater school. But I ended up so loving it. It’s lively, bizarre, entertaining and there’s not much story line to it. I will for sure see it again.
Other highlights…
Going to Rockaway (twice)
I already wrote ALL about my beachy staycation in the Rockaways (<— I actually have been back since). I just love this beach so much it deserves another shoutout.
Teaching Rooftop Yoga with Wellness Official
It was such a treat for me to get to teach rooftop yoga with my company, Holistic Happening in collaboration with Wellness Official.
I will not be teaching again this summer BUT I still highly recommend attending one of their Thursday morning rooftop events. It’s SO lovely up there. More info here.
And of course going to VEGAS was a highlight of July, but y’all already know about what went down there 🙂

Teaching yoga would be so cool! I just did a July Favorites as well and I included how I just started yoga and I am so happy to get into a routine with it (: Happy August!

So happy to hear that! It took me a while to get into yoga — and now I’m a yoga teacher. Who would’ve thought.

Hi Kayla! How have I not heard of this Fitness Junkie book? Clearly I need to read it. And in-person workshops and events are SOO fun and re-inspiring — if that makes any sense. Hope you get to keep the shorts out a little longer, lady! 🙂

You need to read Fitness Junkie! It’s a bit bizarre, and maybe more related to the NYC fitness scene, but I think you’ll enjoy and relate. I so love in-person workshops, it always leaves me recharged and excited.

I totally need to read, How To Be Everything. That is literally my life in a nutshell. I’m so happy to see I’m not alone and that others are embracing this kind of career as well.

I highly recommend it! The whole first chapter I couldn’t stop nodding my head in agreement to what was being said.
