It’s so weird to say I’m coming at you from Costa Rica. Like I’m here, in the jungle, listening to nature as I type this. WEIRD for this city girl. Stay tuned for a full recap of my experience here when the trip is over next week 🙂 In the meantime, here’s what I’ve been loving this week:
Things that are not my favorite thing: the fact that’s it’s already August. Summer, please slow down.
A highlight of summer: leading a rooftop soundbath + yoga event with Leslie as a part of Wellness Official’s summer series.
What I’m Watching + Listening To:
Shakespeare in the Park: Twelfth Night
Even though I majored in theater in college I don’t love Shakespeare. Feel free to judge me. Even so, I love going to the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park every summer, especially when the show is a musical.
I was super excited when the announced one of the shows this summer was a musical adaption of Twelfth Night. Arguably one of my favorite in the Shakespeare canon considering She’s the Man was based off the play.
This production in particular was incredible. The cast includes a 50 person chorus of people from various community groups in the city as well as Broadway veterans. Beforehand we were invited to walk around on stage and join the cast in accoustic renditions of Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours as we munched on free popcorn. Before the show even began Jeremy and I agreed that we were having the best time ever.
Simply put, the 90 minute show is just pure happiness, which sometimes it exactly what theater should be. I think the New York Times review said when it called the production blissful.
If you get the chance I cannot urge you enough to go see this show.
Season Two of Atlanta
Jeremy and I have been working our way through Donald Glover’s brilliant TV show Atlanta. While season one was great, we both agree that the episodes we’ve seen season two raise the bar even more. It’s hard to explain as a show — the TV show follows up-and-coming rapper Paper Boi and his cousin/manager Earn trying to make it big in the music scene. But it’s also SO much more and challenges what a TV show can be and do. The humor is subtle and the social commentary is loud.
Anyone else watch this show?
the Alright Mary podcast
I haven’t been feeling my usual wellness / entrepreneurship podcasts as of late. Girlfriends needs a break. Instead I’ve been devouring Alright Mary, a Drag Race focused podcast which picks apart every detail of Rupaul’s Drag Race. I find myself giggling out loud every single episode at the hilarious banter but I’m also blown away by the commentary of the importance of these queer stories being told via Drag Race on such a big platform, VH1.
If you’re into Drag Race at all, this podcast is for you.
What I’m Reading:
Marriage Vacation by Pauline Brooks Tuner (*sort of*)
I’ve mentioned this a few times now but I’m OBSESSED with the TV show Younger.
The main character works for a fictitious publishing house, Empirical. Throughout the show they mention a lot of books that Empirical is publishing. One of them is the company’s CEO’s ex-wife’s novel that is loosely based on their relationship. Ya follow?
Anyway, in a brilliant marketing gag, the book actually exists.
Besides loving the show, I was also intrigued because the book is ghostwritten by Jo Piazza, co-author of two of my favorite books The Knockoff and Fitness Junkie.
So far it’s a fun read while I’m in Costa Rica plus it gives the backstory of these characters.
What I’m Eating:
brunch at Yuca
A few weekends ago my parents stumbled upon Yuca, a Latin restaurant in the East Village and raved about their brunch. Jeremy and I met my parents there last weekend for brunch and it was SO good. I enjoyed the lobster Benedict, which is served on top of a delicious arepa. My mom had the shrimp Benedict which is served on top of the most tasty potatoes. Jeremy raved about his steak and eggs with chilaquiles. I don’t remember what my dad ordered… but he loved his dish too 😂
We will definitely be back!
