Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing various blog posts with design inspiration for the new apartment. I’ve been having SO much fun saving photos both on instagram and Pinterest. Check out my first apartment design post about overall “vibe” inspiration here.
Today I’ll focus on the living room. I’m super excited to have a pretty big main space in the new apartment. There’s plenty of room for it to be both a living room and dining room. OMG I’m so excited to have a devoted dining room after eating dinner on my couch for 10 years! I’ll dive into the dining room inspo in a future post, but today’s all about the living room half of the space!
What I’m Gravitating Towards:
The living room area is going to be where I have the most fun with color and BOLD choices. As I said in my post previous post, I’m super obsessed with light pinks and turquoises. I think I’m going to want things more muted in the bedroom and office but I feel like the main space is where I can have more fun.
Some things that are super important to me:
- A couch that’s in front of the TV. This probably sounds super silly, but in my old apartment, the couch is perpendicular to the TV. It’s the only layout that made sense in the living room. I’ve grown to hate it. I’m basically always craning my neck to look at the TV. And watching TV with someone else is super awkward from this angle.
- A place for my record player + vinyl collection. Over the years I’ve built up a pretty nice collection of old records. The new apartment currently has a built-in wood media cabinet that was originally used under the previous family’s TV. It’s awkwardly in the middle of the room, though, and not where I want to have the TV set up.I’m thinking about painting it white or blush and repurposing it as a cute little media area for my record player and vinyl collection. I can have a cute gallery wall of music-related artwork above it. I’ve been eying cute prints on Etsy for some of my favorite artists. I love this Harry Styles one and this one as well. There’s also a lot of great Mac Miller posters like this one.
- Furniture that’s light enough to move around. Ahhh, the joys of being a blogger! Sometimes I have to film or take photos of something that requires a bit more space. It’s important to me that most of the furniture is light enough that I can move it around if needed for a picture. Judge away…
- A gray couch. I’m constantly pinning pictures of gray couches which kind of surprised me! I always assumed I’d want a turquoise couch in my next apartment! I’m really digging the gray right now though because it’s neutral but I can play up the color with fun throw pillows and a throw blanket.
- Plants… but only if they are easy to take care of. I love the look of plants in an apartment and the idea of having a lot of plants. But I also know I have a pretty crappy track record when it comes to keeping plants alive. Even succulents. Am I a terrible person if I go for a bunch of faux plants….?
- Pop of color. I don’t want my apartment to be CRAZY colorful. But I love a pop of color here and there.

I’ve pulled a lot of inspiration from @gummergal and @hotpinkpineapples on Instagram. I really love how both of then use color in their homes. It’s fun but not over the top in my opinion.
