As we all mentally prepare for the pandemic winter ahead, I’ve been thinking a lot about comfort TV shows.
My definition of a comfort TV show: Your go-to TV show when you’re feeling crappy. It’s probably a show you’ve watched a million times so you don’t need to watch with your 100% attention. But the familiarity feels like a warm, cozy, hug. Which is what we all need these days.
Do you have a comfort TV show? I also have comfort seasons of my favorite TV show I realized 😂 When I need some good vibes is season 4 of Friends all the way.
My Comfort TV Shows:
Sex and the City: There is nothing more comforting to me than hanging out with Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha.
I did my first full watch of Sex and the City the summer before I moved to NYC for college. It felt like a New York rite of passage. I’ve since rewatched every episode a few times and I’ve slowly been rewatching the series since my 30th birthday. Are some of the series problematic and dated? Oh yes. But I personally still really love the show, the love for NYC it has, and the focus on female friendships.
Roseanne: I’m always nervous to include Roseanne as I don’t agree with things Roseanne Barr herself has done in recent times. But the TV show will always remain one of my all-time favorite shows.
Growing up I’d watch Roseanne every night in bed while I tried to fall asleep. At it’s crux, the show is about finding humor and laughter during the challenging moments in life. If you’ve never watched I honestly recommend it — the show was pretty groundbreaking for it’s time.
Friends: I mean, of course. I’ve watched every episode of Friends many, many times. But it still hits the spot!
If I’m going to get nit-picky about watching Friends as my comfort TV show, a season 4 episode is ideal. It’s the best season by far, and maybe even one of the best seasons of any sit-com.
America’s Next Top Model: Oh, ANTM. Growing up I’d watch hours of Top Model when there was a marathon on.
I’ve recently revisited a lot of the old seasons on Hulu. Some things definitely wouldn’t fly now, but wow do I still love this show. There are some dud seasons (I couldn’t get through rewatching the college season) but I love both the early seasons and then the later Girls vs. Boys ones.
RuPaul’s Drag Race: Ever since my best friend got me booked on Drag Race I’ve been OBSESSED. Right now I’m rewatching Season 8 when I’m eating lunch or dinner. I pretty much cycle through the seasons and jump around to whichever one I feel like I haven’t watched in a while.
It’s my #1 recommendation if you love Top Model and Project Runway — the show combines both (and then some) with a side of LGBTQ+ stories.
Anything on HGTV: House Hunters, Property Brothers, Love it or List It. I will watch all of it for hours at a time.
