And just like that, it’s the middle of January. Maybe you’re already sick of thinking about goals for the new year (no judgment if so!). But maybe you’re still thinking about some things you want to focus on or accomplish in 2021. If you’re looking for a jumping-off point, I got you 😉
I wanted to share some ideas for realistic health, fitness, and wellness goals. As a fitness instructor and yoga teacher, it’s always been really important to me to share the benefits of working out and general wellness that go far beyond losing weight.
I personally am against fitness instructors that make any sort of generic comments during class about working out for aesthetic reasons or using fitness as a form of punishment in any way. There is SO much more to working out than losing weight which is why I wanted to share some ideas for goals in that realm that have nothing to do with weight loss.
Also: You don’t need to have a fitness goal at all.
Health, Fitness, and Wellness Goals for 2021
- Find the workout you love (and that brings you joy to do!)
- Level up in a specific exercise (i.e. do X amount of pushups on my toes or X amount of unassisted pull-ups)
- Try one new-to-you workout every month.
- Up the intensity of an exercise by using heavier weights.
- Hit a new running goal.
- Commit to taking at least 1 rest day every week.
- Try a new style of yoga you’ve never done before.
- Eat meals phone-free.
- Drink 1 glass of water in the morning first thing.
- Ban cellphones from your bed (and mindless scrolling before bedtime!)
- Go phone-free for an hour before bedtime.
- Stretch after every single workout.
- Get outside and walk for 20 minutes every day.
- Create a gratitude practice and make a list every night of what you’re grateful for.
- Set a bedtime alarm — and actually use that as a cue to start getting ready for bed.
- Cook a vegetable you’ve never made before.
- Perfect your form in an exercise that’s not your favorite.
- Move your body in a totally out of the box way (maybe that’s flying trapeze, silks, rollerblading, etc)
- Start meditating (or continue if you already do!)
- Read for pleasure.
- Learn a breathing exercise that can help steady you in moments of stress.

I need to make stretching a priority too… especially now that I’m sitting a lot more than I used to.
