Get a gym tour

First things first: Check out the gym and get a tour. You might also be able to get a free day or week pass to see how you like it.

Get ALL the details before signing anything

Things to look at: What’s the cancellation policy?  Can I freeze my membership? What if I move?  What if I lose my job?  Are there any hidden fees? What’s included?

Don't feel pressured to join right away!

Take the time to think about it so it’s not just a (pricey) impulse buy.

Visit during the time of day you’ll be working out

Some gyms get super crowded during the time before and after work -- better to know this ahead of time then be surprised that there's no free treadmills at 6PM.

Join a gym at the end of the month.

At the end of the month a gym is trying to close in on its sales goal for the month and are more likely to throw in bonus perks and extra savings.
